How it works

Most customers have never hired a landscaper before. Here's exactly what to expect.

STEP 01
Free On-Site Quote
Call or fill in our form and we'll arrange a time to visit your property. We walk the site with you, understand what you want to achieve, and take measurements. No charge, no obligation.
STEP 02
Written Quote & Design
You receive a clear, itemised written quote within 48 hours. For larger projects, we include a basic design sketch or layout plan so you can visualise the result before committing.
STEP 03
Permits (if required)
Retaining walls over 800mm and some fencing require a council permit. We assess what's needed and handle the application and submission. You don't need to deal with council paperwork.
STEP 04
We Build
Our team arrives on the agreed date with materials organised. We keep the site as tidy as possible throughout the build and update you if anything unexpected comes up — such as buried drainage or rock during excavation.
STEP 05
Handover & Aftercare Guide
We walk through the finished work with you before sign-off. You receive a written aftercare guide — how long to stay off new turf, when to water new plantings, what to expect as your garden establishes.

Why Melbourne homeowners choose Greenfield

01

We handle the permits

Retaining walls, pool fencing, and some structural work require council approval in Victoria. Many customers don't find out until work has started. We assess your project at the quoting stage and manage any permit applications on your behalf — at no extra charge.

02

One team, no subcontractors

From turf to paving to retaining walls — we do it all in-house. You don't coordinate multiple tradies or wait for one contractor before the next can start. One point of contact, one timeline, one invoice.

03

Melbourne clay specialists

South East Melbourne's reactive clay soil is one of the most common causes of landscaping failures — poor drainage, shifting retaining walls, turf that won't establish. We've worked on hundreds of SE Melbourne blocks and know how to prepare the ground correctly before anything else goes in.

04

Residential and commercial

We work with homeowners, rental property managers, and small commercial properties. Property managers get priority scheduling, consolidated invoicing, and a dedicated contact for all their managed properties.

What our customers say

★★★★★4.8 / 5· 64 Google Reviews
★★★★★

"Greenfield transformed our backyard from a clay mud pit into something we actually want to spend time in. Turf, paving, a retaining wall, and garden beds — all done in two weeks. They sorted the permit for the wall without us having to do a thing."

Daniel & Priya K.
Berwick · Full Makeover
★★★★★

"Best money we've ever spent on the house. The synthetic turf looks completely real and the kids haven't tracked mud through the house since. Quote was clear, they showed up on time, done in a day and a half."

Megan S.
Cranbourne · Synthetic Turf
★★★★★

"We had three quotes. Greenfield wasn't the cheapest but they were the only ones who explained exactly what they were doing and why. The paved area looks brilliant and the Colorbond fence finished it off perfectly."

Soil & Turf

Why your lawn keeps dying in SE Melbourne — and what to actually do about it

Most of the Cranbourne, Berwick and Narre Warren area sits on reactive black clay that waterloggs in winter and cracks in summer. If you lay turf without treating the soil first, you're wasting your money — here's the fix.

Permits & Compliance

Do you need a council permit for a retaining wall in Victoria?

The short answer is: probably yes, if your wall is over 800mm. The longer answer involves your council, your soil type, and whether your wall is near a boundary. Here's what the rules actually say.

Turf

Natural turf vs synthetic — the honest comparison for Melbourne backyards

Synthetic turf has come a long way and suits Melbourne's wet winters better than most people expect. But natural turf is still the right choice in some situations. Here's how to decide for your specific yard.

Frequently asked questions

The things every Melbourne homeowner asks us before they start.

In Victoria, retaining walls over 1 metre in height require a building permit. Walls over 800mm typically require an engineer's design to demonstrate structural adequacy. If your wall is near a property boundary, pool, or drainage line, permit requirements may apply at a lower height. We assess your site at the quoting stage and advise you exactly what's needed. We manage the permit application and engineering drawings on your behalf — this is included in our project management fee, not charged separately.

It depends on your priorities. Natural turf (we recommend Sir Walter Buffalo for SE Melbourne) has a lower upfront cost ($16–$42/m²) but needs regular mowing and watering, and can waterlog on clay in winter. Synthetic turf ($52–$200/m² depending on grade) has no mowing, no watering, and handles Melbourne's wet winters without going muddy — making it especially popular on reactive clay sites. We show you samples of both at the quoting visit and give you an honest recommendation based on your block, usage, and budget.

New natural turf takes 4–8 weeks to fully root in Melbourne's climate. During this time: stay off it as much as possible for the first 2–3 weeks, water daily for the first 2 weeks then every 2 days, and don't mow until it reaches 5cm height. If you plant in autumn (April–June), the cooler weather and natural rainfall do most of the work for you. We provide a written aftercare guide with every turf installation.

Yes, but the soil needs to be treated first. SE Melbourne's reactive clay (common in Cranbourne, Berwick, Narre Warren, Officer) expands and contracts with moisture, which causes turf to die, garden beds to drain poorly, and retaining walls to shift if not engineered correctly. We treat clay with gypsum, coarse sand, and topsoil mix before any turf or garden bed goes in — adding $8–15/m² to the project cost but making everything else last properly. We've built hundreds of SE Melbourne gardens on reactive clay. We know what works.

An on-site visit at a time that suits you, a walk-through of your property with one of our experienced landscapers, measurements and photos, and a written itemised quote delivered within 48 hours. The quote specifies exactly what materials are used, what work is included, and a fixed price. There are no call-out fees and no obligation to proceed.

Yes. We self-perform turf, paving, concreting, retaining walls, fencing, irrigation, planting, and landscaping. You don't need to coordinate multiple tradies or manage a construction sequence. We provide one quote, one team, and one timeline. For electrical work (outdoor lighting) and plumbing connections (irrigation mains), we coordinate with licensed sub-trades but manage that relationship on your behalf.

Yes. We service rental properties for property managers across SE Melbourne. Property manager clients get: consolidated invoicing across all properties, priority scheduling for urgent maintenance, a single contact for all requests, and competitive pricing on recurring maintenance programs. Call us to discuss a property manager account.

For planting and turf: April–June (autumn) is the best window. Cooler temperatures, natural rainfall, and shorter days let plants and turf establish root systems before summer heat arrives. For hard landscaping (paving, concreting, retaining walls): spring and autumn are ideal — avoid extreme summer heat for concrete work. For synthetic turf: any time of year. We're available year-round and quote in winter for projects starting in spring.
